SMART sees human rights and social equity as a key driver in the development of sustainable transportation systems and innovations.

Biography:

Joe Grengs is Assistant Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Michigan. His work examines the relationships between transportation policy and urban development patterns, with a particular focus on how the suburbanization of people and jobs influences poverty concentration and social inequality. He has developed innovative techniques for measuring accessibility with geographic information systems, and has studied the social consequences of accessibility with support from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, and the National Poverty Center. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering and a master’s degree in Urban Planning, both from the University of Minnesota, and a PhD in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University.
